TEMA Successfully Completes Its Second Horizon Europe Project Review (M36)
13 February 2026
On 12 February 2026, the TEMA consortium gathered in Linz, Austria, for the project’s M36 Review Meeting, marking the successful completion of the second formal review under Horizon Europe.
Hosted by the GeoSocial Artificial Intelligence, a research group at Interdisciplinary Transformation University Austria (IT:U), the meeting brought together project partners and European Commission reviewers for a day of in-depth discussions, live demonstrations and strategic reflection on the road ahead.
A Milestone for a Complex, High-Impact Project
As a Horizon Europe–funded initiative, TEMA is developing an AI-enabled Natural Disaster Management platform designed to support operational decision-making during crises. The platform integrates:
- Extreme data analytics
- Trustworthy and explainable AI
- Semantic 3D mapping
- Prediction and simulation models
- Advanced visual analytics
Together, these components form a modular, interoperable system capable of transforming heterogeneous data streams into actionable intelligence for authorities managing wildfires, floods and other extreme events.
The M36 review was a critical checkpoint, an opportunity to demonstrate scientific excellence, technological progress and implementation readiness. Horizon Europe reviews are rigorous by design: they assess not only whether objectives have been met, but also the maturity, integration and real-world applicability of results.
Demonstrating Tangible Progress
During the two-day meeting in Linz, partners presented achievements across the full technical stack:
- Progress in analytics and predictive modelling
- Advances in 3D semantic mapping and simulation environments
- Improvements in system architecture and interoperability
- Enhancements in visual analytics and user-centred interfaces
Importantly, the consortium showcased live demonstrations from wildfire and flood smartdesk trials. These real-world applications highlighted how TEMA’s tools perform under operational conditions; translating research into practical decision support.
The integration of AI models with geospatial intelligence and high-resolution data streams demonstrates TEMA’s commitment to delivering not just research outputs, but deployable solutions aligned with the needs of crisis managers and civil protection authorities.
Collaboration at the Core
The review also reaffirmed the strength of TEMA’s interdisciplinary collaboration. From AI researchers and data scientists to crisis management experts and public authorities, the consortium continues to bridge technological innovation with operational realities.
Constructive exchanges with reviewers provided valuable guidance for the final phase of the project, ensuring alignment with Horizon Europe’s expectations on impact, exploitation and sustainability.
Looking Ahead: The Final Ten Months
With the second review successfully completed, TEMA now enters its final ten months. The focus shifts decisively toward:
- Consolidating platform integration
- Refining predictive and simulation capabilities
- Scaling and validating pilot deployments
- Strengthening pathways for uptake and long-term sustainability
Above all, the consortium is intensifying efforts to guarantee the successful application of the TEMA platform in real-life scenarios through its four project pilots planned for 2026. Ensuring operational robustness, usability and institutional adoption will be central to delivering lasting impact beyond the project’s lifetime.
The M36 review in Linz marks not just a milestone achieved, but a launchpad for the final stretch, bringing TEMA’s AI-enabled disaster management vision closer to practical reality.
