PRESS RELEASE: Sardinia pilot wildfire exercise in Montiferru concluded successfully

TEMA wildfire exercise in Montiferru

The pilot test of the European project TEMA concluded with a short debriefing at the former Seminary of Cuglieri, following the large-scale wildfire simulation carried out on June 19 in the Montiferru area. The exercise, which also involved preparatory activities on June 17 and 18, took place in Badde Urbara, in the municipality of Santu Lussurgiu, in the same area affected by the devastating 2021 wildfire. It marked a key milestone in the development of advanced emergency management tools within the TEMA project, which is fully funded by the European Union.

It is important to emphasise that the integrated technologies tested in recent days are not intended to replace field operations by specialised personnel, but rather to strengthen and support coordination with command and control centres. These tools are designed to assist the complex decision-making process during emergencies by providing enhanced contextual information and improving situational awareness, not only in the case of wildfires, but also in flood scenarios.

The simulation involved more than 100 participants from the Regional Civil Protection Department of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, the Forestry and Environmental Surveillance Corps (CFVA), the Forestas Agency, the Regional Civil Protection Volunteer Association, and the technological partners of the TEMA project. The scenario simulated a rapidly spreading wildfire threatening residential areas, infrastructure, and the environment. Thanks to strong collaboration among operational teams and project partners, and thorough preparation, the exercise ran smoothly and confirmed the potential of the TEMA platform.

The success of the pilot test underscores the importance of integrating digital innovation into Europe’s civil protection systems. It also represents a significant step forward in the development of the TEMA project, which will continue with additional tests and months of refinement before the final version of the platform is completed.
