AI and Big Data at the Service of Civil Protection: Insights from the TEMA Project in Northern Evia

The one-day conference on “Artificial Intelligence, Big Data and Natural Disaster Management” was successfully held by the Municipality of Mantoudi – Limni – Agia Anna within the framework of the research project Trusted Extremely Precise Mapping & Prediction for Emergency Management (TEMA), on Friday, 29 August 2025 at the Conference Hall of the Mantoudi Town Hall.

The event attracted a large number of participants from public administration bodies and security services of the Regional Unit of Evia, as well as citizens, confirming the strong interest in the topic.

Specialized scientists took part in the event, presenting themes related to the use of Artificial Intelligence in crisis management during natural disasters.

  • Professor Ioannis Pitas, Department of Informatics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, analyzed environmental complexity in relation to Artificial Intelligence.
  • Dr. Vasileios Mygdalīs, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Artificial Intelligence & Information Analysis Laboratory (AIIA Lab) of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, highlighted the role of Artificial Intelligence in managing big data for natural disaster response.
  • Dr. Andreas Antonakos, Head of the Department of Natural Disasters at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, presented the existing technological and scientific tools available to operational agencies and public administration bodies for managing catastrophic phenomena and crises.
  • Ms. Paraskevi Petsioti, Project Manager and Scientific Associate at the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA) of the Ministry of Citizen Protection, discussed the contribution of end-users in the development of rapid response systems.
  • Ms. Aikaterini Kommata and Dr. Georgios Mourgias – Alexandris, Scientific Associates of the Municipality of Mantoudi – Limni – Agia Anna, presented the TEMA application scenarios in Northern Evia.

The conference concluded with an open discussion, leaving positive impressions and paving the way for future initiatives.
